Here at Hyve, we’ve been working with a multitude of extremely talented individuals from the Players to our Staff members and recently had the opportunity to sit down, and review what else these guys needed to bring their “A Game” and really Flourish as members of the Hyve Team.
We were fortunate enough, to get in on the ground floor with one of the most unique roles which we feel should be a staple for all Esports Teams worldwide. The need for ensuring you are a Health and/or Fit individual; yes we use the term Fit lightly due to the many connotations it has. The need for maintaining your optiomum levels of accomplishment starts not only in the mind, but in the physical well being of the teams.
As such, we’re delighted to introduce a brand new member to our Staff Team. Samuele “Alric” DiNicola, is a Masters qualified Sport Scientist. Alric has many versatile skills and a wealth of experience from operating within traditional sports such as Rugby coaching and is recognised and accredited as such.
We know Alric extremely well at this point, but we wanted to ensure that you guys did to, so we gave him a small suite of questions to try and understand why he chose Esports as his chosen field, and how he feels the role applies to the scene.
What got you interested in esports?
This is a tough question. I do not recall a specific moment or game that got me interested in esports, but I always loved playing videogames since Pokémon Red was released for Gameboy more than 20 years ago. Since then, I never stopped playing videogames and it felt natural to start watching the professional scene of my favourite esports.
How important do you feel fitness is within esports?
I believe fitness is a fundamental part of every sport, including esports. First, the health advantages are numerous and undisputable: physical exercise will benefit both your physical and mental health. There is a large consensus in the scientific community about these benefits, and it is undeniable that they will affect the life of an athlete. Moreover, exercising can positively influence your cognitive abilities, possibly providing advantages for esports athletes.
What are your favourite competitive games to Watch/Play?
My favourite games are League of Legends, Apex Legends and Brawl Stars. I do not play League of Legends anymore, but I still follow the LEC, LCK and LPL quite intensively.
Do you feel every team should have a Fitness Coach & Why?
Yes, absolutely. Due to the importance of fitness and physical exercise, having a professional figure taking care of this aspect is very important. Even better if the person has a scientific background in sports science. A few high level teams are starting to add a sports scientist or a fitness coach in their staff, to specifically help with this important aspect. Furthermore, the help that a professional can provide is not only related to the players. Everyone inside the team/organisation will benefit from it.
